Anyone can call themselves a “care manager,” “senior advisor,” or “eldercare consultant.” Families are often shocked to discover there is no universal licensing requirement for many of these titles. Most families are not looking for letters after someone’s name. They are looking for reassurance that the person helping them actually knows what they are doing, understands aging and caregiving realities, and will respond appropriately during difficult situations. Credentials, professional experience, training, and ethical standards matter because aging care situations are often emotionally complicated, medically complex, and constantly changing. Families deserve someone who understands healthcare systems, dementia, caregiver stress, crisis situations, long-term care options, and how to coordinate across providers while still treating people with compassion and dignity. Just as important, professional standards create accountability. Ongoing education, background screening, emergency preparedness, and structured training help ensure consistency, safety, and professionalism across the organization. Families are not simply trusting us with schedules or paperwork — they are trusting us with vulnerable people, emotional decisions, and some of the hardest moments of their lives. When families ask, “Why does any of this matter to me?” the most concrete answer is this: Because when a crisis happens, you want experienced, trained, ethical people around your loved one — not people figuring it out as they go. The Aging Life Care Association (ALCA) is the primary professional organization for Aging Life Care Professionals and care managers across the United States. ALCA promotes ethical standards, continuing education, professional accountability, and person-centered care for older adults and families navigating aging-related challenges. ALCA membership levels reflect education, professional experience, supervised practice hours, and ongoing commitment to the field. During her 15 years with ALCA, Carla Payne achieved the Fellow membership (the organization’s highest membership level, recognizing significant professional experience, leadership, and advanced qualifications within aging life care) level and served in numerous leadership positions, including Southeast Chapter President, board leadership roles, and state unit leadership in both Pennsylvania and North Carolina. She was also recognized as the 2019 Southeast Chapter Member of the Year. While Carla is no longer an active ALCA member, the ethical principles, relationship-centered approach, and interdisciplinary philosophy of Aging Life Care continue to strongly influence Aging Care Matters today. In addition to this professional involvement, Aging Care Matters and its leadership remain actively engaged in the local aging and dementia-care community through organizations including: All Aging Care Matters Adult Day Centers operate under North Carolina Adult Day Care certification standards and are monitored through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) Division of Aging and Adult Services. Families can independently verify certification status, inspection history, and regulatory standing through NC DHHS public records and county monitoring agencies. Aging Care Matters maintains multiple forms of professional and business insurance coverage designed to protect the families we serve, our staff, and our organization. Professional liability coverage helps protect clients in the event of concerns related to professional guidance, recommendations, care coordination, documentation, or services provided by our care management team. This coverage supports accountability and professional standards within our work. General liability coverage helps protect participants, visitors, and the organization in the event of accidents or injuries occurring within our facilities or during normal business operations. Workers’ compensation coverage protects both employees and clients by ensuring staff are properly covered in the event of work-related injuries, helping maintain safe and compliant operations across all locations. We believe professionalism includes not only compassionate care and qualified staff but also maintaining appropriate safeguards, oversight, and responsible business practices that protect the families who trust us with their care. Aging Care Matters follows North Carolina DHHS Adult Day Care staff training requirements while also providing additional internal education focused on dementia care, safety, communication, emergency preparedness, and relationship-centered support for older adults and caregivers. Adult Day Care staff complete required North Carolina training related to: Because many of the older adults we serve are living with cognitive changes or dementia, our team receives additional dementia-informed training beyond minimum requirements. Training may include: Our centers conduct ongoing emergency preparedness education and regular drills to help ensure staff are prepared to respond calmly and appropriately during emergencies. This includes: Staff members responsible for participant supervision maintain CPR and First Aid certification with renewal every two years in accordance with state requirements and internal safety standards. We believe excellent aging care requires more than compassion alone. Ongoing education, preparation, communication skills, and dementia understanding are essential to providing safe, respectful, and high-quality support for older adults and caregivers.
